a space with given function is the same for each individual.
— Place
A space without prescribed function becomes whatever the individual user needs at the time of habitation.
— Non-Place
right, I’ve stepped back from my project and had a look. Its good! but thats not what i want. i want it to be anarchic and not be anything like something from dezeen which i feel it is progressing toward. what I’ve done so far is interesting but not attention grabbing and i need to create within the boundaries of place and non place concept a new space which provokes design.
I want to make it fail.
— me
i am creating a space with the same principles and structure as our city, within a building.
— just another thought as i figure out what i am trying to achieve.
a non place carries the potential to become a place once a person or group of people attach mean, use or values to it.
— just a little idea that struck me. although i may have said something similar before, i have just realises that one mans place, maybe anthers non place.
This space struck me as whilst i was scrolling through the mass of spaces on Dezeen due to its similarity of how i envision Place + NonPlace. The designers have created places within this building in the form of box offices. These boxes offer people a meeting place, or somewhere to do work or socialise, however they are surrounded by non-places as its built within a building. From my perspective i love the places that have been created, however i feel the designer has failed to utilize the non-places by only seeing them as transient spaces, which they are, but can also be much more.
To create a hybrid space born from the concept of Place + NonPlace.
Both spaces are completely opposite from one another, however it is due to their lack of relationship that allows them to jigsaw together to create the fabric of our everyday environment. Although we use both these spaces daily we don’t fully appreciate either spaces for their roles in society, therefore my aim is to unite and emphasize their differences in such a small space, hence the choice of Mynshull House. I hope by doing so the inhabitants will realize their conscious decision to choose one space over another due to the opportunities that space proposes in relation to the inhabitants emotions, activities and use.
Stella K Showroom by Pascal Grasso Architectures
This image of the Stella K showroom shows the main corridor through the space. The idea behind it was to create a showroom through this 115ft non-place, the idea is to display objects and materials upon the protruding boxes, however i can envisage such spaces in public spaces being used as climbing frames, tables, chairs and windows.
